Diamond or CBN ? (D or B prefix to grade)
High particle strength & sharp cutting characteristics provide high productivity & super-efficiency when the following metals are machined by :
Diamond :
Non-ferrous metals such as Tungsten Carbide, as well as ceramics & glass.
CBN :
Ferrous (containing iron) metals : hardened carbon & alloy steels, high speed steels, cast iron, tool & die steels, superalloys & hard stainless steels.

ABOUT DIAMONDS

Diamonds are the hardest material known to humankind. Composed of carbon, they are formed at great depths in the earths crust after being subjected to extreme heat & pressure, and are then transported to the earth's surface via volcanic pipes. The average diamond content of a diamond-rich ore is only 1 part in 20 million, making the recovery of this precious mineral an expensive exercise ! Fortunately, man-made (synthetic) diamonds are now being produced to stringently high standards, & whilst they maintain all the qualities of the natural product, they offer a wider variety of grit types, shapes & friabilities to cater for particular tool grinding applications.

ABOUT CBN

CBN is the second hardest known material, but occurs only as a synthetic product & has never been found in nature. It is formed under similar conditions as synthetic diamond, the difference being that in CBN some carbon atoms are replaced with boron & nitrogen atoms as nearest neighbours. Because of it's chemical nature, CBN presents no affinity to low carbon steels, & this explains why it is used with great success in the grinding of high speed steels.CBN is harder than conventional abrasives at ambient temperatures, & maintains this hardness over a wide temperature range.

  Grit Size    top

The choice of grit size is determined by the finish & amount of stock removal required, & affects the hardness & wear-resistance of a grinding wheel. It is basically divided into rough, medium, fine & polished grinding finishes. “Roughest acceptable finish” should be the deciding factor when choosing grit size, as finer grits have lower stock removal rates & higher wear rates.

  Concentration   top

The concentration of a diamond or CBN grinding wheel directly determines it's performance capability.
The choices available are :

SYMBOL
DESCRIPTION RECOMMENDED APPLICATIONS
C125
HIGH CONCENTRATION Profile or creep feed grinding, cutting. Small area of contact up to 4mm.
C100
HIGH CONCENTRATION Profile or creep feed grinding, cutting. Small area of contact up to 6mm.
Tool face grinding for increased life of wheel. Wet grinding.
C75
MEDIUM CONCENTRATION Surface, cylindrical  or tool grinding, saw & knife sharpening.
C25-50
LOW CONCENTRATION Fine & polish grinding. Large area of contact. Higher than recommended peripheral speed.
*** The operator may choose to apply high concentration wheels to a large area of contact - this is dependant on individual
         operator preferences.
  Bond   top
Bass Abrasives offer various bonds to suit the wide variety of grinding applications. These range from friable,
free-cutting bonds (suitable for dry grinding & polishing) to harder bonds (wet grinding & small areas of contact).
